Perfect Height: How High to Mount Your TV

“Oh shoot where is the TV going?”
“What height is normal?”
When considering the position for your TV, there are two critical factors to consider: Height and Center.
The first thing to consider is the center. In some cases where the space has already been defined, this is very simple and quite easy. For example, if you are replacing an old TV that had a position you liked, or already have a dresser or TV stand, it is quite easy to find the center of those objects and the TV will look perfect above those objects. However, without a fixed reference point, or if you are creating the arrangement of the room from scratch, the center becomes much more difficult to determine.
Remember, centering the TV on the wall isn’t always the best option. Try to center the TV and subsequently a possible TV console to your couch. Or, if the couch is an odd shape, center the TV to the rug that defines the living room. By doing this you naturally create the living room space, thereby making the TV look like it belongs even though it may not be in the center of the wall.
However, if the wall on which the TV is being mounted is short to the point that a TV mounted 6 inches off-center would look strange, mount it centered to the wall, rather than the couch.
Don’t feel pressured to decide before your technician comes, however. MNYC will map out all possible positions before we even touch our drill, ensuring you are confident in the final placement.
The second, and perhaps most important point is TV height. The number one TV mounting mistake is mounting your TV too high. This will cause your viewing experience to suffer greatly.
The experts at Mounting NYC recommend mounting your TV at eye level for the best viewing. For most entertainment setups, this will put the bottom of the TV at around 34” from the ground, or 9”- 12” from an average TV console, placing the center of the TV on average at 48.” Going over 12” above furniture will create a noticeable gap. This will ensure comfortable viewing and a stylish look!
FAQ:
Question: Do I have to consider where the studs are when I mount my TV?
Answer: No! The most important thing is the visual center of your space! Studs are placed every 16”- 24” behind the wall, meaning any TV position will incorporate at least one stud!
Question: What if I have a soundbar?
Answer: If you have a soundbar, you may want to consider moving the TV up the same number of inches as the height of your soundbar. This will maintain an aesthetically pleasing height, while compensating for the soundbar.
