Can My Wall Support a TV?
Mounting your TV can be a daunting task, as the wall material can greatly affect the installation process of your TV. While your MNYC installer is putting up the TV, you may be wondering; What material is my wall? What kind of anchors are they using: How do I know that the TV is secure?
In New York City, there are three major types of walls used in construction: Drywall, Plaster, and Brick / Concrete.
Drywall
The first, drywall, is most common and often found in recently constructed or newly renovated buildings. Drywall is strong and will support a mounted TV. The drywall is secured by metal studs placed evenly behind the wall. For most TVs, your installer will use “snap toggles.” These bolts slide into the hole and open, bracing against the drywall, and can hold up to 247lbs* each. Your installers may opt to use studs for the installation, depending on mount placement. For heavier TVs, or TVs on a swivel mount, your installer will use a combination of “snap toggles” and studs to ensure the TV is secure.
Plaster
Plaster, found in older buildings around New York City, is usually thick, tough, and irregular, and sometimes has brick behind it. Plaster is usually a challenging material for TV mounting, however, the experts at Mounting NYC will ensure your TV is safe and secure. Your MNYC installer will carefully drill into the plaster to avoid cracking. The anchors most commonly used in plaster are 3/8” anchors that hold up to 255lbs* in most plaster. Due to the irregularity of the plaster and different types and thicknesses, weight ratings vary. However, with our expertise and experience we will deliver an excellent final product.
Brick and Concrete
Yes, you can mount a TV in Brick and Concrete. Both materials present their own set of unique challenges and benefits for mounting. While they are different materials, they are similar enough that the same techniques and anchors are used for both. Both materials are very tough which make them harder to drill through, but hold up to 2-3 times* as much weight as drywall. Each anchor individually has a capacity of 500lbs* each in both materials. Your installer will bring the correct tools for the job so the process is simple and easy.
